Through the combination of both sensor signals, the engine control unit knows when the first cylinder is in the top dead point. The camshaft sensor works according to the Hall principle. It scans a ring gear on the camshaft. The rotation of the ring gear changes the Hall voltage of the Hall IC in the sensor head. This change in voltage is transmitted to the control unit and evaluated there in order to establish the required data.
Check the connection line from the control unit to the sensor using the ohmmeter. Remove the connector from the control unit and remove the sensor, check the individual cables for continuity. A circuit diagram is required for the pin assignment. Reference value: approx. Check the connection lines for short circuit to frame. Measurement between sensor plug and vehicle ground, control unit plug removed.
When the camshaft angle sensor goes bad one portion of the information needed to operate the engine is lost. Fortunately the computer will have enough information from the remaining sensors to keep the engine running. The computer will then substitute an alternative value for the missing data. This action causes the engine to loose a small amount of power and fuel economy.
Camshaft sensor service costs will vary per manufacturer and depend on the location of the sensor. These sensors should last the life of the car and do in most cases, but as with all electronics they can fail at anytime. Begin with the vehicle on level ground in park with the engine off and the emergency brake set. Though engine appearances will vary the process is similar for most vehicles.
You can get the replacement part and tools from Amazon or the local parts store or car dealer. Remove Camshaft Sensor: Locate the sensor by inspecting the front, rear and top portion of the engine. These sensors are in pain sight and will have a two or three wire connector attached to them. Use a small flat blade standard screwdriver or pick to release the electrical connector tab to remove connector from the sensor.
Gently pull the connector out from the sensor. It can be a little stuck due to the weather pack seal inside the connector which is designed to keep out moister. Using a 8mm or 10mm in most cases socket or wrench remove the camshaft sensor mounting bolt by turning it counterclockwise.
In other words, a bad camshaft can also interfere with the functionality of the crankshaft position sensor, and ultimately it will cause various problems for the overall experience you have with your vehicle in terms of engine performance. The camshaft position sensor is always located near the camshaft, often at the top of the valve cover , but it can also be installed from the side of the cylinder head.
Check around the head or valve cover and follow any electrical wires and you will for sure find the camshaft position sensor. A little market research will help you get the best price for the part and the associated labor costs. These prices can vary depending on which supplier you buy it from, where you live, and which company makes it.
The cost of replacement in a luxury car can be relatively much higher. If you were to replace it yourself, the cost of replacement would be nearly halved. It can be easily replaced using the tools you most likely already have. Ask any car question in our new community! Magnus is the owner and main author of MechanicBase. Certified Automotive Diagnostic Technician. I have a Volvo V40 1. I first thought of fuel and topped 12 litres and still it could behave like before checking on Google I found this important info which helped me to get the problem and solve it.
Thanks very much. I appreciate your wealth of knowledge on the topic of Camshaft Position Sensor Symptoms! I recently replaced both the intake and exhaust sensors on my e46 SMG M3 and started perfectly, but apparently, since I did not tight battery terminals enough, it's not received the correct voltage and the SMG pump is not engaging gears as it previously did! Your recommendations are welcome, if nay. Very informative!
