The problem is that every time I buy plants, I see more of them, little tiny ones crawling on the glass. I'm OK with keeping snails, but only when I've done the research on the type of snails I want, but I really don't like getting pond snails with my plants.
I would advise that if you want snails, research on the type of snails available and if you don't want babies, pick the kind that will not reproduce. Do your research, some snails don't need a partner to reproduce, and some snails won't reproduce in captivity. About the snails that hitch hike in plants, I really don't want them in my tank.
I have 2 trapdoor snails in my 30 gallon and they are quite helpful. I used to consider snails unnecessary but they do a good job of cleaning up any food the shrimp or fish will not touch. I even put one inside the trap I keep fry in and it does a good share of the cleaning duty inside the trap.
I do love snails and most of my tanks have them but this is what I have experienced so far: CONS: some species do add significant bio-load e. Apple Snails a big snail in a small tank, if dies and goes unnoticed, could foul that tank sometimes the baby snails find their way through filters intake and create some problems there some snails with devour most plants Apple Snails are mostly safe for plants can devour eggs that are hatching and I intended to raise ask my Angelfish pair!
Can pass disease parasites to fish, specially if brought in directly from the wild. PROS: most times, when snails population explodes it is a sign I am overfeeding something I still fight with myself not to do some snails keep sand substrate risk of "lethal methane pockets" in check can act as efficient alarm when something is wrong in the tank as they would reach and stay at surface say dissolved oxygen depletion can become free live food are excellent gardeners algae problems?
Not going to happen with fish who have strong parenting instincts as most cichlids. Pepe Santo Domingo. Many things have been already said, but snails poop a lot.
I'm serious by 'a lot', my aquarium is full of it That said, if it came out, it must have gone in, so as long as there are diatomes or something for it to nibble on, it won't eat your plants.
I agree with what has been said. One thing that I will add is that snails will break down decaying matter such as fish waste and decaying plant matter into smaller molecules which is easier for your biofilter to use in your cycle. My pond snails have not taken over my tank, nor have they added to my bioload. If you are worried about hitchikers on your plants, bleach and rinse them for a few minutes before planting.
I like having snails in my tanks. I have malaysian trumpet snails in all of my tanks, hundreds in my 55 gal. I used to have mystery snails, but I can't seem to keep them alive anymore. Question Caring for ramshorns? Not all snails eat algae. Not all snails that eat algae eat the same kind of algae. Algae is normal in any aquarium and having a basic clean-up and scavenger crew is a good idea but beyond that, if you have a specific problem like a cyanobacteria bloom , hair algae, green water or other issues, you may need a solution beyond a few snails.
You may be seeing a symptom of a larger problem like poor water flow or lighting quality and unless that problem is addressed, it will keep coming back no matter how many snails or other clean-up crews you throw at it. What are the working conditions? It takes a different kind of person to paint the walls of a house than it does to paint the cables at the top of the Golden Gate Bridge.
It also takes a different kind of critter to clean up a nano-reef than it does a rock-filled bare-bottom aquarium or a deep sand bed. Some snails, starfish and other animals popular in aquariums also eat other snails or invertebrates and corals.
Are the animals you are choosing suitable for the environment you have? Some of the most popular saltwater clean-up crew snails. The mystery snail breeding process is quite simple. You need a female and a male in a tank. The female will simply lay the eggs near water the surface. You will notice some sort of irregular cocoon where the eggs are placed. If you do not want to breed them, then you can easily remove the eggs from the tank.
It takes a mystery snail egg about 2 to 4 weeks to hatch. The air around the cocoon should be pretty humid for the eggs to hatch. They will be fine. To help the mystery snails breed, try lowering the water level a bit so females have room to lay the eggs.
We will repeat this. The mystery snail female will lay eggs close to the surface. So, do not make the mistake of thinking you need to toss the eggs in the water to survive. You will kill them this way. Let them hatch on the surface where the mother has placed them! The best mystery snail tank mates should be peaceful. They will just mind their own business. Mystery snails will also get along well with Killifish, Cory Catfish, or Otocinclus. In general, avoid fish that like to eat snails, like Oscars, Cichlids, or Crayfish.
However, they have also spread to other parts of the world. In the wild, they live in rivers, ponds, and swamps. Their main diet is composed of dead plants. They only eat live plants when they do not find other available food sources.
Nevertheless, Mystery Snails can thrive in a wide range of water conditions. So avoid to do drastic water parameter changes for it will stress them out. You should establish the tank before you bring the snails in. Cycle it before and make sure it is ready to receive the new community. Do not go over the top. Establish a moderate, clear, oxygen-rich water tank.
In general, keep a pH of 7. A normal community tank lighting is enough. If possible, keep the pH levels a little high. At these levels, they will simply go into some sort of hibernation mode. The most important thing is to eliminate Ammonia and Nitrites. They should be 0. This might pose a bit of a challenge since most plant fertilizers and tank treatments contain copper. Copper is fatal to Mystery Snails , so make sure you read the labels twice before you add anything new to the aquarium.
Mystery Snails love calcium-rich waters. Their shells are made of Purchasing a Calcium test kit might be a good idea if you want to grow a large, healthy community of Mystery Snails. They will spend most of their time slowly moving around surfaces. So, the more available areas, the better. One good suggestion is to keep the tank full of vegetation.
