How does olive oil help your hair

Using olive oil isn't just as simple as pulling it off your kitchen counter and dosing your strands with it. It can be, but there are a few more effective ways to use it, depending on your needs. Pre-shampoo treatment: As noted above, washing your hair can actually cause damage to the strands through friction and surfactants.

So before you take a shower, evenly apply oil—the amount will depend on length and thickness. If you are especially dry, we recommend coating the whole strand. Or if you are prone to oily scalps, you can just focus on mid-shaft to the ends. Tending ends: While nothing can fix dry and split ends besides a trim, you can temporarily improve the look of them. It's as easy as applying a tiny bit to the bottom of the hair: The oil adds shine to the area, making it appear less damaged dullness is a key sign of dead ends.

And, while this particular study didn't test olive oil specifically, it showed that regular use of oils in general may help prevent future split ends by protecting it from physical damage. Smoothing back frizz: Applying oils gives the appearance of frizz reduction by coating and sealing the cuticle. As a briefer on frizz: It's caused by raised cuticles on the strands, which causes the individual strands to separate.

As we've mentioned before, olive oil is likely too heavy for some hair types to use as a styling agent, but if your hair is prone to extreme frizz, it can help combat fly-aways. To apply: Use a small amount, and with your fingers, comb it through your hair, focusing on your hairline or part, which tend to attract more frizz.

Additionally, Hill says hair oils can penetrate your hair strand and reduce the amount of water your hair absorbs—which, in turn, cuts down on shrinkage and frizz.

Trichologist and celebrity stylist Kari Williams says that although most can benefit from using it, thin hair can be easily weighed down by olive oil, so those people should avoid overdoing it. Now, as for your scalp? That's where things get a little trickier.

To be extra safe, Hill advises against applying it to the area at all. However, it can be helpful for dry scalp by restoring lost ceramides and oils, so if you choose to apply olive oil to your roots, Dr.

Obayan recommends using it lightly and not dousing the scalp. Although the hair benefits are aplenty, olive oil lacks the scientific evidence to support its use as a hair growth oil for faster, longer strands or hair density. So why does everybody talk about olive oil like it's a magic elixir for growing really long hair? Obayan points to a study that showed that there is a component of olive oil called oleuropein that can directly impact the growth cycle, but that study was done on mice, and not, ya know, people.

And even then, that doesn't account for how much olive oil, or how frequently you'd need to apply it for it to be effective. When a particular product is known as liquid gold, you know it is one which will provide solutions to myriad problems, including promoted healthy hair.

So, make your hair's best friend! You get dandruff when the scalp gets dry and starts developing flakes. It can also make the scalp itchy. If you want a simple solution, you can mix two teaspoons of lemon juice with an equal amount of olive oil, and water. Massage this mixture well on your scalp , and leave it on at least for 20 minutes before rinsing it off with lukewarm water.

Use this treatment at least once a week for long-term relief from dandruff. The lemon helps dandruff peel off the skin, and olive oil softens the scalp and moisturises the hair.

Alternatively, you can also use gently heated olive oil on your scalp , leave it overnight, and rise it off the next morning. TIP: Ensure you wash the lemon mixture off within 30 minutes of applying so the acidity does not cause any harm. In winter when the hair gets dry, it gets more prone to breakage and split ends. Olive oil adds weight and moisture to your hair and can be used at a great fix. Every day, take one or two drops of olive oil between your fingers and run them thoroughly through the ends of your hair.

The oil will act as a serum and repair the split ends , and if used regularly, it will also prevent new ones from developing.

Also, when you have time, warm some olive oil, massage it on your scalp and leave it overnight for it to nourish your hair fibers. TIP: Cut off the split ends you have before you start this regime for faster and better results.

Do you experience brittle hair, which can be seen when you run the comb through your hair? Then it is time to cure the roughness with olive oil. A simple hot oil massage will work for this, you have to apply and massage generous amounts of the warm oil to your hair length and leave it overnight before washing it off in the morning.

For an added advantage, try a mixture of honey with olive oil. Warm three tablespoons of olive oil and mix it with two teaspoons of honey. Gently massage this mixture on your scalp and hair for 10 minutes. Leave it on for 20 minutes after that before rinsing it off with lukewarm water.

The olive oil, which is full of vitamins A and E will help smooth the hair. The honey will help reduce dryness. TIP: Seal the olive oil and honey mixture in by wearing a hot towel after application.
