Esther further antagonizes Kate by cutting flowers planted as a memorial to her stillborn child, casually reveals when other woman flirt with John given he previously had an affair and reads intimate details from Kate's diary. She is further alarmed when Sister Abigail, the head of the orphanage, warns her and John about Esther's tendency to be near when things go wrong. Esther overhears this and later kills Sister Abigail by bludgeoning her to death with a hammer.
She convinces Max to help her with this and they hide all pieces of evidence in their treehouse. A few days later at school, she opens Daniel's backpack causing his books to fall out when he's walking up the stairs. Kate gets out of the car to help him but leaves it running. Esther comes back to the car puts the gear selector in Neutral and takes off the parking brake, causing the car to roll down the hill with Max still inside. Daniel decides to retrieve the hammer which was used to slay Sister Abigail to prove Esther's guilt.
However when he reveals his plans to Max, Esther overhears. The next day, Daniel goes to the treehouse and finds it unlocked. He enters the treehouse and searches for the hammer but finds nothing. Esther appears behind him and sets the treehouse ablaze to stop Daniel. She leaves the now-on-fire treehouse and locks Daniel inside, in an attempt to kill him. Daniel climbs out from the treehouse through the window and near burns to death, only ends up falling to the ground, injured and unconscious.
Esther near murders him with a brick but Max shoves her out of the way. Daniel is hospitalized cause of the neck injury and abdominal bleeding. Esther Near murders Daniel at the hospital but doctors save him. Kate, Knowing what happened, furiously slaps Esther and knocks her down and is immediately subdued and sedated.
Esther tries to seduce a drunken John, who finally realizes Kate is telling the truth and threatens to send her back to the orphanage. Meanwhile, as Kate is coming out of sedation, she receives a call on her cell phone from the Saarne Institute. She has hypopituitarism, a disorder that stunted her physical growth and caused dwarfism and as a result, she spent most of her life posing as a little girl. The doctor tells Kate that Leena is dangerous and especially violent.
At home, Leena, hurt from being scolded, murders John now wearing black long sleeves with her hair tied looking aged. Kate rushes home, only to find John dead. Leena gets a revolver from John's safe, shoots Kate on the arm and hunts Kate down before she goes to search for Max. Leena later follows Kate outside to a frozen pond and lunges at Kate, where they fall and struggle onto the ice as Max watches from a hill above the pond. Max maneuvers herself to grab the gun that was dropped by Kate during the struggle.
At first glance, the Colemans see Esther as a quiet, peaceful, and kind girl with many talents. However, all of this is only a facade, and it is later revealed that Esther is not a child, but instead a full-grown antisocial woman. Leena is an evil and manipulative woman who will do anything to satisfy her lust after other men, such as murder, threats, attacks on their families, and causing them to suspect their own wives.
Besides her savage side, Leena is extremely talented at playing piano and painting. However, her paintings have a very dark and disturbing element to them under a blacklight.
Most of their themes are about her dark and lustful nature, like one of a murderer and another about herself and John having a sexual encounter. Mole Mrs. Toad Ms. Balloon Man Teen Titans Go! Lex Luthor Teen Titans Go! This of course shocks Kate as Esther is displaying far more knowledge of sex and its slang than would be expected for a child her age. Kate wants to bring her to a therapist, Dr. Browning, but John doesn't want to make all that fuss about "one little dirty word.
Esther first day as school is not made easy for her as a classmate named Brenda teases Esther about her odd fashion. A few days later, Brenda once again teases Esther for carrying a bible to school and throws it and has some pages fall out of it.
As Esther tries to quickly pick up the pages, Brenda notices the collar on her neck and tries to grab it and Esther freaks out and screams.
A few days later Esther sees Brenda at the playground and pushes her off a playground slide, breaking Brenda's ankle.
Max saw Esther shove the girl, but covers for Esther by saying that the girl slipped. Sister Abigail ,the head of the orphanage, warns Kate and John about Esther's tendency to be around when things go wrong. Esther overhears this and later kills Sister Abigail by bludgeoning her with a hammer. She forces Max to help her hide the body and the hammer.
Daniel sees Esther and Max descending from his treehouse from behind a rock, not knowing they hid the hammer there. Later that night, Esther threatens to cut Daniel's genitals off if he tells anyone what he saw. Kate is later told that the Russian orphanage Esther came from has no record of her ever being there. Kate later finds Esther's bible and sees an inscription, declaring the bible property of the Saarne Institute.
Confusing her even more, Kate finds out that Saarne is in Estonia, not Russia, as all of Esther's paperwork stated. Realizing that Kate is closer to figuring out her secret, Esther decides to torment Kate even more by picking flowers from Jessica's Kate stillborn baby grave.
Kate grabs Esther's arm to get the flowers back and Esther runs off. Later that night Esther sneaks in John's work area, gets a vise and breaks her own arm and convinces John that Kate broke it. In the meantime, Kate discovers that Saarne is not an orphanage, but a mental institution.
Daniel learns of the hammer from Max and decides to get it and go to the police. However, Esther sets the treehouse on fire, intending to get rid of the evidence and kill Daniel. Daniel escapes by falling out of the tree, severely injuring his neck and knocking him unconscious. Esther tries to finish him off by smashing a rock over his head, but Max shoves her out of the way just in time.
Esther again tries to kill him at the hospital by unhooking his respirator and attempting to smother him with a pillow, placing him in a near-fatal coma. Doctors rush into the room and manage to save Daniel. Outside, Kate angrily hits Esther, calling her a bitch, and is subdued and sedated by doctors. John leaves with Esther and Max to go home while Kate slumps into unconsciousness again. That night, Esther tries to seduce a drunk and dazed John, who had drank Kate's last bottle of wine.
John threatens to call the orphanage about her, telling her to stop her behavior and go to her room. Esther goes upstairs, holding back tears until she reaches her room, then submits to a deep heartbroken crying spell before losing her temper and tearing up her room in a rage.
She also takes off all her makeup, her prosthetic dentures, bandages that cover her breasts, her collar and the ribbons on her wrists. Esther then dresses in all black with her hair tied back, without all the makeup she now looks aged. John goes up later to comfort her and discovers her disturbing artwork in her dark, now-ransacked and empty room; shortly thereafter the electricity is shut off. How did Esther die in orphan?
But, Esther overheard this and as Sister Abigail was leaving in her car, Esther pushed Max into it's path, forcing her to swerve off the road. When Sister Abigail rushed to see if Max was hurt, Esther killed her with a hammer and convinced Max to help her hide the weapon in their treehouse. Does the father die in orphan? How scary is orphan? I have never seen a movie as dark or disturbing as 'Orphan'. It is an excellent horror movie, but some of the scenes were so gruesome that I'd figure that I would have nightmares for a week.
Is Max from orphan really deaf? Actress Aryana Engineer, who plays the deaf Max, is actually mostly deaf and normally wears cochlear implants.
